Mastering the Art of the AI Prompt: How to Stop Getting Generic Results

linkedin Mar 10, 2026

In the modern business landscape, the saying is quickly becoming reality: AI probably won’t take your job, but someone who knows how to use AI better than you mightWhether you are a sales professional, marketer, or entrepreneur, the ability to leverage Generative AI has shifted from a "nice-to-have" skill to an absolute essential .

However, many professionals find themselves frustrated by generic, "fluffy" outputs that don't land well with clients or bosses. The secret to moving past basic AI responses lies in your prompting strategy. By treating AI as a conversation rather than a search engine, you can unlock insights that are practical, tactical, and aligned with trust-based selling.

The "Super-Smart Intern" Rule: Why Context Matters

The biggest mistake most users make is failing to provide enough context.  Think of AI as an incredibly intelligent intern who just started on their first day. They are capable, but they have no idea who your company is, who your audience is, or what your specific goals are .

Instead of asking a general question like, "Write a marketing plan," you must be specific :

  •  Define your industry: (e.g., "I am a pharmaceutical company in a highly regulated field.")
  •  Define your audience: Clearly state who you are trying to reach.
  •  Define your channels: Specify if you want to focus on social media, email, or blogs.

As the saying goes, you must "be specific to get terrific." Without clear boundaries, the AI will fill in the gaps with its own tangents, often leading you away from your actual objective.

Moving Beyond the "One-Shot" Prompt

Many people treat AI like Google; they type in one question and expect the perfect answer. In reality, the best results come from the "chat" in ChatGPT.

Effective AI usage is a dialogue. If the first response isn't quite right, don't give up. You should lead the AI by:

  • Acknowledging what parts of the response were good.
  • Pointing out sections that need a rewrite or more detail.
  • Asking the AI to go back and refine earlier parts of the conversation to ensure they flow with new information.

The CRISPY Framework: Building Better Guardrails

To ensure your prompts stay "on the rails," we utilize the CRISPY framework. This structure provides built-in specificity that prevents the AI from drifting into generic territory.

  • C - Context: The background and situation.
  • R - Role: Telling the AI exactly who it should be acting as (e.g., a senior consultant).
  • I - Inspiration: Providing examples or specific facets of the problem.
  • S - Scope: Defining the format, length, and style.
  • P - Prohibitions: This is the most critical and overlooked step. Tell the AI what not to do. For example, "Do not use em dashes," or "Do not start with 'In today's fast-paced world'".
  • Y - You: Encouraging the AI to "interview" you to capture your unique point of view and tone.

Trust but Verify: The "Read Aloud" Test

Even with a perfect prompt, AI can occasionally "hallucinate" or fixate on the wrong details. Always read your content out loud before publishing. If you stumble over a sentence or if it doesn't sound like something you would actually say in a real sales conversation, it needs to be refined. You are the conductor of the train; the AI is simply the engine.

FAQs

Q: What is the most common reason AI prompts fail?
A: A lack of context and specificity.  If you give a general inquiry, you will get a general, often useless response .

Q: Can I use AI for research if I want it to stay within my own data?

A: Yes. You can instruct the AI to use only the information within your conversation or specific documents you have uploaded to prevent it from researching external (and potentially inaccurate) sources.

Q: How do I stop AI from sounding like a robot?

A: Use the "Prohibitions" part of the CRISPY framework to ban common AI clichés and always read the output out loud to ensure it matches your natural speaking voice.

Q: Should I write one long prompt or break it up?

A: For complex tasks, it is often better to "chunk" the work. Let the AI know it is a multi-step process and handle one section at a time to maintain clarity.
